With the emerging viability of vehicle to grid technology, one of the 'zipcar' type groups should leverage their already existing infrastructure for automobile tracking, replace the majority of their fleet with plug-in-hybrids (pure electric vehicles might also work in some areas) and sell the energy back to electric companies. Even better, negotiate contracts with major power consumers (like subway systems) to provide a power buffer during their peak usage times, which would drastically reduce their contract prices with the power companies.
This would take a little thought and a lot of planning, but imagine a fleet of all-electric zipcars throughout the city, with GPS navigation and of course the already present remote tracking. Instead of hailing a cab, just grab your GPS enabled cell-phone to find the closest zipcar (which someone left outside their office after driving from the subway station to work). Hop in, drive to the subway station, and plug in the car for a free subway pass (which, with a little work, could be keyed from your ell-phone, requiring no paper or passcodes). After arriving at your destination station, your phone shows that you still have a 2 mile walk to your destination, and you're running late. Just grab a car from the lot and drive... There would be a LOT of logistics involved, especially at the periphery, to make sure cars are charged and close to where they're needed, but what a service it would be.
